As a former program director and support group leader for an Alzheimer’s Adult Day program, Scott had the opportunity for close contact with many families and dementia patients. From these relationships he has been able to put to verse some of their feelings, and his own experiences. The artwork strives to give visual impact to the accompanying poems and prayers. The spirit of caring that emerges from discourse surrounding the drawings compelled the artist to produce the largest project of his career, “Portraits and Memories”. And it still continues 16 years later, to inspire, encourage, and bring understanding to caregivers, professionals and families.
Send us your comments about the artwork, poems and prayers. We would love to hear if they brought comfort, understanding and any other thoughts.
“I Can Remember”, a poem, was composed by Scott Waterhouse in July of 1993 while he worked with individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in a social day care program. The poem speaks to those caregivers that care for a memory impaired person, a subject of both personal and professional interest to the artist. Because of demand for a second print, the artist decided to devote time doing a series of 15 drawings with accompanying poems or prayers.
Love Is The Key
Love is what I feel when
you smile or touch my hand,
Love is how we know each other’s
thoughts and understand,
Love is all the good times shared
with happiness all can see,
Love is what you mean to me -
and, love will always be the key.

A Caregivers Prayer
Lord, show the strength within me
because I am very tired,
Show me patience to care for the one I love,
Show me peace of mind as I struggle
through each day and night,
Show me joy in the little things my
loved one does to help me out,
Show me love when anger wants to
take over my thoughts,
Show me compassion when my loved
one becomes frustrated,
Show me hope when I can see no hope,
And Lord, show me kindness for those
who care about me.
Amen

“ Everyone thought it (Alzheimer’s - Portraits and Memories) was so tasteful, and beautifully done. I have heard over and over again, how you capture the true “being” of each individual you sketch.”
